How Did Alabama Lose Most of Its Coastline to Florida?

Why Does Florida Have a Panhandle?

Where did that Florida Panhandle come from? Follow the money!

Transcript from Bizarre US State Borders Explained

Florida’s panhandle used to be much longer.

This didn’t last for long though, since this part of Western Florida would be annexed into the Mississippi Territory, and then shortly after, it would be broken up into Mississippi and Alabama.

This left Alabama with this tiny coastline, and Florida a much shorter panhandle. But even this almost became a part of Alabama.

You see, the residents of the Floridian panhandle felt more connected to Alabama rather than to the rest of the state. This was due to the “swamps and dense forests” which made it difficult to go east.

And so from 1811-1901, the Florida Panhandle tried to become a part of Alabama 11 times!

Probably the closest attempt to succeeding was in 1869, when all the West Florida counties were polled on whether or not they wanted to be annexed by Alabama. A majority 64% of the population wanted annexation but despite this, Alabama didn’t annex it.

This was because they actually had to purchase it from Florida first for $1M, but it just didn’t seem worth it to them.

All annexation attempts largely came to an end after the completion of the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad in 1883; finally ending its isolation from the rest of the state.

Black Bear Burglar Hank the Tank Captured

Hank the Tank weighs over 500 lbs.

Aug. 7 (UPI) — Hank the Tank, a large black bear responsible for at least 21 home break-ins in South Lake Tahoe, is on her way to a Colorado wildlife sanctuary after California officials captured her and three cubs.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife transported the bear, identified officially as 64F, to The Wild Animal Sanctuary near Springfield, Colo., on Monday after a veterinary check, CDFW spokesperson Jordan Traverso told UPI in an email.

Biologists captured the bear Friday along with three cubs, the department said in a news release. The cubs may be relocated to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue.

“The cubs were safely transported to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue,” Traverso said. “The goal is to rehabilitate them. The time that can take varies. They will continue to be assessed to make sure they’ll make it in the wild before they would be released.”

She’s Not Real…. But ‘It’ Has Plenty of Followers

Her fans think they found true love — but she’s not real.

Milla Sofia is an artificial intelligence-generated influencer whose sultry photos on Twitter and TikTok are racking up thousands of likes from deluded social media users, Futurism reported.

“[I’m a] 19-year-old virtual girl from Helsinki Finland. I was made by AI. Check my other social media accounts from the link below,” reads the Twitter bio on Sofia’s account.

Sofia, who goes by @AiModelMilla on her verified Twitter account, is certifiably fake, yet her 7,790 followers can’t help but drool over bikini photos of her in Greece.

“Still in Santorini, and I’m ‘Greek’-ing out over how to leave this paradise!” reads a punny tweet from July 19 with over 35,000 views and 2,000 likes.

‘Wow, look at you, so stunningly beautiful with a gorgeous smile,” writes one Twitter user.

Is digital beauty also only skin deep?

Do most of her followers know? What do you think?

Surfing Legend Kelly Slater Misses Cut to Leave 3-Decade Career in Limbo

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater missed the World Surf League tour’s mid-season cut Saturday in a blow that could spell the end of his more than three-decade career.

The 51-year-old American, widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time, was eliminated in the round of 32 at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.

It meant he finished outside the top 22 halfway through the season to miss the cut, a contentious new concept introduced in 2022 to slim down the field.

He can no longer compete on the top level championship tour unless he is offered a wild card for the back half of the year. Alternatively, he could surf the second-tier challenger series, or retire.

“It is what it is. Let’s see how things turn out,” the Florida-born Slater said on the WSL website after his elimination, adding that he was not sure about his plans.
